Sparring at Ajax-Pickering Wado-Kai Karate
There are risks to practicing any martial art, and karate is no different. However, our philosophy is that safety is critical to everyone's ability to train and learn in a secure environment.

When students arrive for class (and during breaks) they are encouraged to quietly warm up and prepare for class. They must ask a black belt for permission before sparring with another (non-black belt) student.

Before class and during breaks, students must not engage in any activity that could lead to injury to themselves or anyone else.

Students must prove their knowledge of Kihon Kata #1 before they are allowed to spar with other students. All students should also adhere to the following sparring guidelines:

  • Students must always listen to and comply with the instructions of the sensei leading sparring drills, particularly regarding instructions to start and stop.
  • No contact of any kind (kicks or punches) to a partner's head.
  • No contact of any kind (kicks or punches) to a partner's back.
  • No contact of any kind (kicks or punches) below a partner's belt.
  • White belts, yellow belts and orange belts should not make contact with a partner's body in any way during the execution of any kick or punch.
  • Senior ranks are allowed light body contact, but must control their techniques.
